The Sicilian cart (or “carrettu sicilianu” in Sicilian) is an ornate, colorfully decorated horse or donkey-drawn cart native to the island of Sicily.
Carts were introduced to the island by the ancient Greeks at some point between the 8th and 5th centuries B.C.
They became very popular in the 1920s. At that time there were many thousands on the island.
They have two wheels and are primarily handmade out of wood. Horses were mostly used in the city and flat plains for hauling miscellaneous light loads, such as fruits, vegetables and wine.
Sometimes they were used for festive occasions such as weddings and parades as transportation. It was a sort of ‘taxi’ or ‘truck’ for our ancestors.
This is now one of the most famous symbols of Sicily in the world!
Carts are known for being covered with carvings and brightly painted scenes from Sicilian history, paladins, and folklore as well as intricate geometrical designs. These painted scenes also served the purpose of conveying historical information to those who were illiterate.
The Sicilian cart is made in several provinces in Sicily each having their own style.
Although you may find Sicilian carts to buy online, note that they could be mass produced and printed by industrial machines.
Our miniature wooden Sicilian carts are hand crafted and hand-painted by the best native artists. They follow the traditional style used in the province of Catania, one of the most refined styles in Sicily.
Our artisans look forward to making a unique handmade Sicilian cart with love just for you! It serves as a beautiful ornament to have in hour home!
